The point is _to take it with you_, not to go back for it. A kit should be designed to contain the things you are most likely to need in the event of a disaster. If you live in a hurricane area, maybe not a tent, but a tarp to spread on some patch of dry land or roof. Everything in it should be in a waterproof container.

Also, I would just take the essentials, and my sword, and go out on basically a suicide mission, to kill as many zombies as possible. Most commercial survival kits are meant to keep you alive for 72 hours or so. There are some very nice prepackaged survival kits on the market these days. They typically divide their contents into 6 or 7 categories: Food & Water, Shelter, Light & Communications, First Aid, Sanitation, Search and Resue and Packaging. The food and water in these kits is just enough to survive – you are not going to feel like you just left McDonalds so I would pack more food and water. After reading many survival type websites, another recurring idea is to have lots of cash on hand. This seems to be the first thing to run-out during a disaster.

I took some survival training courses decades ago. Back then they taught us that people need…in order of water, (2) food, (3) clothing, (4) shelter. Everything else is a bonus.
If it were me, I would pick-up some water purification tablets and make them central to my survival kit. Then, some bottled water.
Next, rule-out canned foods. Limited shelf-life? You must believe what people tell you. I I have canned food in my basement that is 5 years old and very edible. I also keep a box with a 4 week supply of canned food in it for emergencies. had blizzards in the that kept me inside for up to a full week, so that of supply comes in handy. If you are really worried about its freshness, simply rotate your emergency supply once a year. (Put the old stuff in the pantry for immediate use and refill the box with new cans.)
Oh yeah, and another thing. Some of the MRE foods have fillers in them that are meant to make you constipated. They do this so that soldiers that have just eaten feel an immediate need to relieve their bowels during combat. But after days of eating this stuff, it of creates a problem. A better option is the canned food route.
Warm clothing is Wool is best. Also a rain poncho that can be used as an emergency shelter. I could go on and on here, but just use some common sense. Hat, shirt, pants with billowed pockets.
The thing really "cool" to think that you can run about the streets or an urban landscape with your weapons and forage for food. The only problem is, there is probably someone else that was a scout sniper in Iraq that has a high-powered rifle with with a scope, and pointed at you from 200 yards away. And he gonna like it when he sees an armed stranger coming near his position.

you want a CDV-700 Geiger counter. after Fukushima nuclear disaster I decided a chance of a radiological disaster or terrorist attack, so I added a Geiger counter to my list. But i afford one so I ended up with a KFM- Kearny Fallout Meter. you can make one for about $30. the KFM is designed to be homemade, of materials that should be easily available in a american house around 1960. obviously times have changed, what expect to see in a household the same as see in a 2010 household. so its best to make it before the disaster rather than trying to make one after the disaster.
get some more guns too. you and your revolvers, even if you have 10 men on your side all with revolvers no match against me and my 6 friends, armed with semiautomatic rifles, bolt action rifles, and a pump shotgun. a basic pile of ammo is 1k rounds per gun, per caliber. a basic stock of ammo (stock is larger than a pile) is 2500 rounds for secondary calibers and 10,000 rounds per main battle firearm. a stockpile is a tremendous amount of ammunition of at least 10 cases/tins of each caliber you shoot. for example, I have a good stock of ammunition, nearly 100,000
there is LTS foods, LTS stands for Long Term Storage, its dehydrated foods that is and good for as much as 25 years. I have some LTS foods, easily fitting into a backpack, a 2 supply for 1 person. to eat you can use water or hot water and ready to go! no cooking. averages $150 per month, per person.
Also emergency radio, good to have a few backups, windup flashlight, car tools, road flares, fire cooking pots/pans, knives for defense. building shelter, cutting firewood or butchering game animals.

Honestly emergency kits that you can put together are listed online and preparing for a zombie apocalypse would be a waste of your time. Last i checked zombies are a monster of video games and hollywood.

When it comes to guns, decide what you want one or more for. Are they for self-defense? Hunting? Mechanically, a revolver is a good choice – there are few things to go wrong. Pick a common caliber so you can easily obtain ammunition, and pick one that is easy to handle. A .44 magnum is intimidating for self defense, and packs a lot of punch, but hauling around a heavy gun and heavy ammo. If you get a .357 magnum, it can fire both .38 special and .357 magnum rounds. Make sure you practice with it – no good having it in a SHTF situation if you know how to use it. Consider adding a rifle or a shotgun to your kit – and overlook the .22LR.
